Day 11: Building a Location Independent Lifestyle

Day 11: Working at the Library

Day 11: Working at the Library

Building a location independent lifestyle has been a dream of mine for quite some time. There’s something to be said for working on your own terms, being your own boss and having control over (to an extent) your income. I’ve dabbled in the past here and there, but I think now I really have the means and the motivation to make that life a reality.

I pretty much now am living a location independent lifestyle, but in terms of living in Australia and supporting myself fully and comfortably with it is still a ways off.

If I can make it so I’m producing a fairly stable and profitable income for Sydney life (it’s expensive here!), I’m pretty sure I can make it in most other places in the world.

Plus, I will prove to Pat that producing more than an extra income is possible, which will also probably help to convince him that taking time out to travel is not so risky.

This is my ultimate goal, but making it happen is another story.

  • WhyGo Australia has really good potential, but as of now, I’m still building it up.
  • The newly launched Her Packing List is sure to rock, but that will take time. The goal of that site is to make money.
  • The Female Travel Underground newsletter is still growing, and that should work to grow Her Packing List.
  • I plan on doing a photo and a post for every day this year (this is number 11) on Brooke vs. the World, and I can already see the growth from that, as well as commenters coming out of the woodwork (I heart you all). Growth here will ultimately lead to growth in those other areas as well and more earnings from advertising.

Besides that, I do blog articles here and there for extra change. It’s not much at the moment, but I do like to think that I’m setting the building blocks for future growth perhaps. However, I’m thinking something needs to be added or changed in this whole equation. I haven’t figured it out yet, but I’m hoping it will come to me (feel free to send me ideas!).

Like I said before, I’m so in love with 2011 and the possibilities that await. Let’s hope I can make it a good one!

Good luck with you online business! I surely understand the pain (in terms of the costs) of living in Sydney. I’m here as well. I was in India a few months ago and it really annoys me that what you need to pay in Sydney for a lunch can take you through the whole day in India…

Thanks, Magda 😉 I hear ya on the money issues.

I like how you’re thinking outside of the travel writing bubble. I think a lot of people in our little group of travel bloggers get caught up with trying to make money from their websites when the audience is small and the number of people producing content is massive. The economics don’t stack up for 99.99% of people.

I think to make money from a website, you need to be writing in a niche and for people that couldn’t give two hoots about blogs and bloggers. The average joe gets onto google and types in a few search terms and then browses for content. They want facts, not stories — that’s why I think boots ‘n all is popular. Lots of great, relevant content. My blog, not so. 🙂

Outside of the travel blogging bubble, I think there are plenty of opportunities to get a bunch of small income streams. I have a few ideas myself that will probably rely on me being the first to be successful. 🙂 Success being measured in the hundreds of dollars :):):)

If you felt you were knowledgeable about certain aspects of Sydney, you could do guided tours??

    • Brooke January 12, 2011 at 8:31 pm #

Thanks for the comment 🙂 I don’t know about the tour guide thing… it wouldn’t really help with the location independent thing.

I’m with you 100% of the way, trying to figure out how to make my lifestyle location independent and also looking at non-travel ways that other people have had success with.

I started documenting my 365 photo project, but forgot on day 3-5. Instead of scrapping it so early I’ve continued and the story through photos is really interesting.

Glad you’re sticking with the photo project! Mine is quite boring at the moment, but hopefully I can make it more interesting as time goes on 🙂

    Hi Brooke,
I think it’s a great idea and you rock for being able to pull it off! Look forward to following you on your journey!

    • Brooke January 13, 2011 at 7:31 pm #

Hi Anna! Thanks for stopping by and commenting 🙂 This year is going to rock!

Love all your ideas and I hope they work! If you can make it happen living in Sydney then you’ll be able to support yourself anywhere in the world. We’re just at the point of diversifying and starting to monetise … we’ll see! It would be nice if we were a little less reliant on my husbands ability to work location independently!

Good luck keeping up, a picture + post every day seems quite a bit of work to me.

    • Brooke April 24, 2011 at 12:18 pm #

Thanks, Frank! It is a lot of work!
