Since my home town is just a 3 hour drive south of Chicago, I have been to Chi-town a few times in the past, making stops at the big malls, the House of Blues and the Field Museum (which always makes me start singing “If It Makes You Happy” by Sheryl Crow). But, I had never been to the popular Shedd Aquarium, so we made it a point to go on this most recent stop in the Windy City.
The Shedd Aquarium is like most other aquariums in the world in that it has sections with sea creatures from various areas and a big tank that holds sharks with other exotic fish. I will say that I enjoy the shark tank over on show at the Sydney Aquarium better, but there’s still something mesmerizing about the one at Shedd.

Like the Great Barrier Reef
One of the things that I find really interesting now is when I come across the Australian sections of aquariums and zoos because before I would have always been like, “Wow, that is flipping amazing!” Now, I’m just like, “Oh yeah, that’s what it’s like.” Funny, eh?

Gotta love that face!
A cool feature of the Shedd Aquarium is the section that holds the penguins, dolphins and beluga whales. If you go and sit in the stadium, you have a view of not only the jumping animals in the pool, but also a view out to the great Lake Michigan.

Got the shot!
There are usually special exhibits at aquariums and museums, and now on at the Shedd is one on jelly fish — something that both freaks me out and makes me curious at the same exact time. I think the photos speak for themselves.

We spent maybe 2.5 hours at the aquarium and felt that was sufficient. I love museums and galleries, but to a point — so there was no pairing up our day with a Field Museum and Shedd Aquarium combo.
Would I recommend this attraction on your Chicago holiday? Of course!

A tourist in your own city. Mad! Probably should do that sometime in Sydney. Not sure how it would work though… Would have to go with a Sydney newbie and get excited with them.
We visited Shedd Aquarium in 2007 when my husband was on a business trip. Pretty neato! We didn’t get to see all of the exhibits (we missed the dolphins!) because we didn’t arrive until later in the day. Love the photos!
wow… you got amazing shots… especially of the jelly’s. They fascinate me too! When I was in Sydney I would go down to either Darling Harbour or Circular Quay and just look into the water to see the jellyfish swimming about… I spent so much time just watching them… they’re so weird.
