 Day 150: At the Stinking Rose |
It may not be something I’d recommend to those couples going on a first date, or maybe even a third, but the Stinking Rose restaurant in San Francisco is an experience I recommend to anyone that loves a garlicky good time. Everything — I’m talking everything — from the 40 clove (literally) garlic chicken to ice cream with a hint of the pungent aroma is made with this veggie herb.
Pat and I made a reservation for our first night in San Fran and went to the restaurant in extreme hunger. We started off our meal with some bread rolls and some garlic pesto spread, which was just enough to tide us over before our spinach and garlic fondue made its grand entrance. Oh, cheese, I love thee!

Further on in the meal, the main courses arrived, and we decided to split some fresh ravioli and the much anticipated 40 clove chicken. I mean, we were curious as to whether or not it would be made with an entire forty cloves of garlic…
… and it was! Those delicious, spicy, pungent garlic cloves were served up right next to our chicken and mash.

So, I bet you’re wondering about the garlic. Is it too much garlic?
Actually, no, it’s not so bad. The garlic pesto spread that we put on our bread rolls in the beginning of the meal was probably the strongest since it was a raw garlic. The cooked garlic in our pasta, fondue and chicken was milder — and just simply on the awesome flavor side.
As for my clothes, that’s another story. My sweater and Pat’s shirt were coated in the aroma.
But still, it’s not so bad.
Unfortunately, we were too stuffed to try some dessert, so I can’t let you know about the garlic ice cream. Next time… next time.
I know I told you, but FYI for anyone else reading this post, they have a Stinking Rose restaurant in Los Angeles as well. We went for my sister’s birthday a few years back and had a great time too!!

Next time you’re in Riga, check out… I don’t remember the name in Latvian (starts with a K, I think) but it’s referred to as The Garlic Pub. Ohhhh, it was SO good!
Sadly, even though I lived in San Fran for several years, never got to The Rose. Oh well.

The name says it all but the food must be delicious if they are still open. Did you actually eat a lot of the garlic that was on the side? Wish they had one in FL!
We DID eat some of the garlic! But it was roasted, so it had a mild flavor. Very interesting place!
Wow… this sounds like my kind of restaurant. When I was in Sweden, visiting a friend of mine, we went through 2 full garlic bulbs in 6 days… granted we made garlic bread a few times with at least 5 cloves used, and garlic mashed potatoes for a pot luck enough to feed 12. MMMMMMMMMMM Garlic. Can’t get enough! I’m curious about that ice cream….
I LOVE THIS PLACE. I try to eat here whenever I am in San Fran. I really love the curtains they have that are made out of wine corks!
