When Hairy Met Sally

March 2010

When Hairy Met Sally is a travel newsletter that discusses the dreaded subject of hair removal on the road.

Armpits, legs, eyebrows and bikini.

All are places we’d rather not have to think about, but are generally inclined to because of our gender.

The tone of this newsletter just kills me – yet again a humorous but thorough look at a ladies only subject :-)

      Glad you enjoyed it, again!

I found this one truly hilarious. I’ve shaved my legs less than a dozen times in my life, and honestly…I’ve never had a guy comment on it. When I’m traveling, nothing gets shaved – too much hassle, too much stuff to carry. People who would judge me on having hairy pits aren’t folks I’d want to associate with anyway, to it works to weed out the folks I don’t want to waste my time on in the first place.

      Hey Kelsey,

I remember you telling me that you didn’t shave your legs… Is your hair quite fair? For me it’s like a personal comfort decision, especially with the armpits. I get sweatier and all that junk if there’s hair there :)

I used to get teased a lot when I was a kid bc my legs were hairy – hairier than my brother’s! haha It kind of traumatized me I think. oh social norms…

Yay I’m so glad you wrote about this! I always wonder what other ladies do but am too embarrassed to ask.

I admire Kelsey for not shaving but I am more comfortable if I do, especially if I’m going to the beach! Still haven’t found the perfect solution yet.

My personal travel shaving/not shaving story:
I went to Fiji for 6 weeks with 13 other ladies (and one dude) about a year and a half ago for an archaeology dig. We were in a very remote part of the country (tiny island a day’s boat ride from the main island) and water was scarce so we didn’t shower very much, much less shave.

I’m not a very hairy person, and I tend to let my leg hair grow in the winter at home anyway (plus we were wearing pants or long skirts every day), but the worst part was the armpit hair by far. The local women don’t shave, and I don’t even have that much armpit hair compared to other people (something I found out on this trip!) but it still grossed me out so much. Funnily enough, it doesn’t bother me on other people, just myself. Second worst was the hairy nether regions. I’m not a bare-everything person, but I shave occasionally at home, and keep it trimmed in the meantime. I managed to shave my legs and armpits when we got back to the main island and stayed in a hotel for a few days before coming home (first thing I did actually, before even washing my hair) but didn’t have enough privacy to go downtown until we got back to the states… let me tell you, I have never been so happy to put something sharp near my privates!
