Day 120: The Launch of the Great Crusade, It Started with One Little Idea

Day 120: Post-party drinks.

Day 120: Post-party drinks.

On Saturday, I was invited along to a launch event at the rugby in Sydney for The Great Crusade. A group of Qantas marketing managers, some well-known TV-types, a few digital agency folks and a handful of bloggers all hung out in a private box sipping beers and chatting about this big promotional event. Sounds pretty fancy, hey? Well, it was, but it probably wasn’t as fancy as what the winners get of this new Great Crusade competition.

How does 16 days of all expenses paid travel and adventure to New Zealand in a sweet campervan sound? How about access to all the Wallabies games in the process?

The Great Crusade

The Great Crusade is like the ultimate travel and sports competition, and it’s going to be huge. Sponsored by Qantas (who sponsor the Wallabies) and Tourism New Zealand, every aspect of the adventure is going to be covered. All 25 campervans have been decked out in Wallabies adverts, day after day of activities have been planned (bungee jumping, jet boating, visits to vineyards and thermal springs) and a famous movie director is going to be filming the whole thing. Have you heard of Gregor Jordan? Well, if not I suggest you head over to IMDb to start doing some research.

If this looks like something you’d be down for, it all starts by creating a video showing how far you’d be willing to go to support your team. To find out more, visit The Great Crusade.

The Launch Event

So, I spent the evening learning about this big (I mean huge) event, and it is literally mind-blowing when you realize just how many levels a competition of this nature encompasses. We met so many different people with different roles in the big scheme of things that it was difficult keeping track, but I loved seeing how something so massive started with one little idea. It’s inspiring for a dreamer type like myself who is always wanting to start something fantastic and travel-related.

Cool random fact I learned: Craig from Y Travel Blog used to play for the North Sydney Bears back in the day. Those guys are full of surprises!

More than anything, being invited to an event of this caliber just shows how integral the blogger and social media are in the plan. I’ll be interested to see where this campaign goes on that level, especially with the likes of Qantas doing a bit of reaching out to the new media types. How exciting!
