When you’re hungry in a rush, there’s nothing quite like some fast food to get you going again. I am an absolute sucker for McDonald’s (I’m not afraid to admit this), but the Malaysians have opened my eyes to something new.
One of my favorite Malaysian specialties is the chicken rice. If you don’t know what this dish entails, you would probably assume it is fried rice with chicken in it… but oh, it is so much more. Imagine some delicious chicken meat served on a plate with a side of dark soy sauce, light chili sauce and maybe some shallot sauce. Sometimes, there might be a side of bean sprouts. On another plate is usually a serving of some of the best rice you will ever eat, flavored with the juices of chicken and other spices. There is also a small cup of chicken broth soup with a few pieces of bok choy type veggies and green onion bits inside.
If you’re lucky, you can request chicken breast meat only.
I can’t explain how happy this dish makes me. When I was talking before about my secret travel place, I was actually referring to a small shop below the escalators at Wynyard station in Sydney where you can get chicken rice for an uber cheap price (oops, secret’s out!).
At the markets in Penang, I got the chicken rice for a mere 5 ringgit, and it was worth every penny. I would easily pay double without blinking an eye.
At the mall near our hotel in Seremban, I found the mother load: an entire fast food shop dedicated to chicken rice, rightfully named, “The Chicken Rice Shop”. There is a God!

I thought my love for chicken rice couldn’t get any bigger. That was until I discovered the best vegetarian bbq chicken rice I’ve ever had (well, that I’ve ever had ever) in my life!
At a mall in Kuala Lumpur, we stumbled upon a vegetarian stall that made heaps of faux meat dishes. Pat and I LOVE faux meat dishes, not only for the taste, but also for the novelty of having our taste buds feeling tricked. The faux meat chicken was absolutely fantastic!

Malaysian food, overall, is not my favorite since so many dishes come with seafood and seafood flavors. But, what they do have that I like, I LOVE!

I’m with you on the chicken rice. I don’t eat seafood at all so find it pretty hard to eat in other Asian countries who put fish or fish sauce in everything!!
I’m so glad you feel my pain! It’s a nightmare trying to order anything. We got a side of vegetables the other day and they mixed them with little fried prawn bits. Seriously a nightmare.
Guess what, that is my favourite fast food stall aswell! I’ve never missed visiting it everytime I go back to Malaysia! They also have a great 3 layer tea which is amazing but very sweet
Awesome
It is very tasty, yum! The 3 layer tea is a bit too sweet for me… as are most of the Malaysian drinks!
