Sydney’s Kings Cross is the infamous nightlife area of town, and one which I don’t really frequent because that often calls for a messy night out. Only, last night I was there, and it wasn’t too bad. What’s the secret?
Get in early and get out early, particularly before 2 am when everyone just gets too smashed. Expect to drink your beers out of plastic glasses (it’s for your own safety man), and don’t litter the streets if you can help it as that’s where a lot of action goes down… including vomiting.
If going any time soon, expect it to look almost as if you’re walking around in Clueless; the early 90s are back in FULL FORCE at the moment and it almost freaks me out. Then again, I’m wearing the same t-shirts I’ve owned since 2007, so I’m not the best person to judge fashion. I did, however, wear my awesome infinity skirt as a top last night, and I think it went over well.
I found another little Mexican food joint, Tomatillo, that Pat and I stopped at before catching a taxi home, and at the time it was amazing. I especially liked the low ceilings and rustic wood tables. However, I’d like to go back and try it without any alcohol killing my taste buds. I will say, though, that the nacho chips were not the thick corn chips that I prefer with Mexican food.
It may sound like common sense, but don’t drink too much, and don’t drink too much if you are taking a taxi home. An already expensive ride can be so much more if you blow chunks and then have to pay a cleaning fee. Hey, that wasn’t me, but it can be a common occurrence.
Looking too drunk while out can also keep you from getting in to some bars and clubs, which I witnessed in our group as Pat and I were calling it a night. They were rejected and had to reroute elsewhere.
Oh, the times on the Cross.

So this 80′s/90′s fashion thing wasn’t just in Perth? Ugh, I was so tired of seeing people (especially 15-year-old girls) in ugly frayed bleached jean shorts and big off-the-shoulder above-the-belly-button tops. Haven’t noticed this fashion trend back in the US, thank goodness, but it’s only been one day…
Also, I used to live in the Cross and Hugo’s was pretty much the only place I would ever go there. I suppose it is definitely a place to experience though…
hahaha…. In Paris I took a photo of a guy with his pants in a french roll and then socks on top of his pants! I kid you not. I almost died when i saw this. Too young to remember the 80′s for what the really were but man, I wanted to tell him – you are seriously going to regret this one day. I need to post that photo on the blog. Also another big thing were the overly nice (or worse jean) hammer pants. Get ready for baggy ass looks – all the rage in Europe. I know that look isn’t going to anything for me!
You know in 6 months of being there as a Uni student, I never went to King’s Cross and it wasn’t because I didn’t want to!
It seems that no one ever wanted to go with me when I mentioned it (and I didn’t want to go alone, I’ve heard it can be a bit sketchy) then they all went without me when I was away! Great friends huh? haha. Kidding of course.
Love the top BTW!
