My Favorite Hostels RTW

new years 11 Hostels make travel life interesting – not always in a good way – but with a stay in one, you never really know what you’ll get. It could be the best adventure of your life, or it could be no sleep and bed bugs that take over your memories of a place. Luckily, I’ve never had to deal with that buggy side of the equation, and for the most part,… Read more

Fave Posts Part 1: Language & Communication

kick in the cock You can’t travel around the world and not experience some level of difficulty with communicating. It’s a given almost anywhere you go; even if I were to travel to the deep south in America I would have troubles with the language. While looking through my site’s archives, I noticed that I had touched on the subject quite a few times, and so here are the best posts that have spawned… Read more

The Story of Brooke vs. the World

brooke-pat With almost four years of content filling the pages of this weblog, it’s not uncommon for new visitors to not really understand where and how this all started. It would take quite some time for somebody to go back through all the drivel, but it also takes a bit of time to answer the emails. The best way to deal with this is to create a post recapping the evolution… Read more

Back to Basics

billy3 So, you might have noticed that things around here have changed. It has been a stressful month dealing with the blog, especially since there was that big GoDaddy/WordPress exploit going around. Yep, good ol’ Brooke vs. the World got hit on 3 separate occasions with that virus, and it provided a super headache for me each time. What the virus did was inject a line of code into everyRead more

Making the World a Small Place – Soup Wednesday

You travel. You meet people. You leave. You leave new friends. A little over a week ago, I received a Facebook message from a girl I taught with in Ukraine. The message was also addressed to many other teachers that had come and gone the same route as we had. She brought up an interesting idea — to all take part in having a meal of soup on Wednesday to… Read more

News & Updates From My 'Hood

Hey all! I’m going to do a fun little list post here since I didn’t get around to making a nice video for the week. I think I might have been a little hasty with the one video a week idea, but still I will try. Actually, I’ve been quite busy this past week or so, which is why I just wanted to catch up and give you all the… Read more

Baltic Graffiti – A Photo Essay

I spent around 6 weeks in the Baltic countries of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia back in 2008. Basically, I was killing time while waiting for my teaching gig to start up in Ukraine, and I really couldn't have picked a better place - to hang out, meet cool people, eat good food and enjoy a nice mix between Eastern and Western Europe - than in that part of the world.

Learning Like a Child: Host Family Flashback Part 2

For seven long weeks I lasted as a regular in the Kyrgyz family. Somehow, now when I think back, I don’t know how I did it. Some days were more trying than others. As a complete newbie to Russian, I quickly realized just how much brain power I expended at my lessons constantly thinking, translating and deciphering all day long. When I came home, I simply didn’t have it… Read more

For Your Viewing Pleasure… A Funny Video Review of My Travel Undies

A couple of months ago, I released the first Female Travel Underground newsletter on the topic of Travel Undies. In it, I did a brief write-up on the ever-so-famous Ex-Officio underwear since I am the proud owner of several pairs. Since then, I have decided to make my blog more lively with *hopefully* weekly video posts running on Wednesdays. (Please don’t hold me to this – this is… Read more

Learning Like a Child: Host Family Flashback Part 1

When a language is just so different from your native tongue, the best thing you can do is to forget about any preconceived notions you have about language structure and just attempt to learn it like a child. I learned my lesson the hard way – by spending countless portions of class time hounding my poor teachers as to why things were said one way in English, but another in… Read more
