It’s kind of sad, but when it comes to my America trip, all I want to talk about is the food. I mean, I had 3 years to make up for; all my favorites were on the list. And my mom, well don’t even get me started. She was bringing home all the things I loved, one on top of the other (uhm enough for like 8 meals a day), and who am I to turn down my favorite foods?!
Pizza was on the list. I used to joke with my study abroad mates in Italy about how my family ate pizza like no other and so the endless option of eating pizza day after day was never going to grow old. I freaking love pizza, and America has the varieties that make it something I can never get enough of.
Because of that, we had pizza oh… 5 times during our USA jaunt, and 4 of those were just in the 10 days we spent in Peoria. I kid you not.
Here are a few of the styles I enjoy when back in the States:
Chicago Deep Dish Pizza
Okay, you can get many different versions of the deep dish pizza, but when we were in Chicago I had to take Pat to Giordano’s to get their unbelievable pizza pie. Oh… my… gawd… how many pounds of cheese are in each slice?
I could have easily done with more crust and less cheese (I left half of it on my plate), but it was an experience no less. Ah, just as I remembered it.
Thin-crust Pizza
I’m normally a thick-crust pizza person all the way, but there is one local thin-crust style pizza that rocks my world. It is just so different than all the others, with its slightly powdery yet crisp crust and it’s finely diced sausage meat. Honestly, my description just isn’t going to do it justice, and neither is the daily photo.
Sweet-sauced Pizza
A good sauce goes a long way in making a pizza. I know Papa Johns is a rather large pizza chain, but their slightly sweet pizza sauce (and their crust and cheese) is the bomb. Seriously. I love me a nice savory pizza with just that little bit of sweet. Yum, yum.
I have a feeling that moving overseas has been a good thing for me. I am a sucker for all the unhealthy American foods, like pizza and hot dogs and red-meat burgers and steaks. When I’m Down Under, those occurrences are much less frequent, which is definitely good for my health!

Oh… my… god!
So hungry right now – those pizzas look amazing. We’re doing a pizza tour of Brooklyn but I think we definitely need to go and eat at Giordano’s as well.
oh a pizza tour of NYC! That sounds awesome
Brooke (and Amy/Kieron), for a great thin crust in Chicago, you definitely need to try D’Agostino’s…was absolutely my favorite and the last place I ate before I had to go gluten-free. They have the same sweet kind of sauce you describe w/ Papa John’s.
Next time! Thanks for the tip
That deep dish makes me want to hurl. I don’t cope with cheese overload!
LOVE cheese.
I always find myself eating way to many pizza’s when i’m travelling, they are always great
Not so sure if I would have liked that deep dish pizza, there is a limit to the amount of cheese a pizza should have.
That food looks amazing. You just made me hungry for Davis Brothers. I’m a deep dish fan also. I love Bella Bacino’s in Chicago.
Davis Bros is amazing
Thanks for the Bella Bacino’s tip for chi-town.
Always wanted a deep dish in Chicago but i’ve never had it because i’ve never been to chi-town unless you count the airport. Which doesn’t really count. hahha… I totally agree though. As sick as I am over the crap ass food they sell so cheaply in the US it is nice to fall back on the old childhood standards like pizza – which is one of my favorite foods of all time.
The first thing I always ate when I came back to MA from the west coast was pizza from a very specific shop. Likewise when I head back to the San Diego the first thing I do is grab a burrito from a very specific shop – Sometimes on the way from the airport directly! The east coast can’t make a good burrito and the west coast can’t make a good pizza so I always get the best of both going back in forth. I know it’s bad but it’s so, SO good!
Americans love their food and there is definitely a lot of passion for food in the US. I just wish we could get rid of big business so people could make great food made from healthy ingredients and stop looking at how to save a buck. It would be so much better for everyone.
I’d love a good burrito right now. It’s like the drama for all American expats in Sydney… where to get the damn Mexican we love!
YUM YUM YUM. Seriously, our US trip has been so focused on food. Don’t get me wrong it was great living in Italy but they are MISSING some things over there!
Add to that my Italian boyfriend that wants to try all the things he’s seen on TV and we are basically on a food tour of America!
That deep dish looks amazing, I wish I was heading to Chicago this trip!
Yep, they sure are missing some stuff over there
Glad I’m not the only one that went on a food tour of the US!
Mmmm, pizza! Now I’m totally craving some! American pizza was one thing I really missed in New Zealand, too. I mean, yes, they have pizza there. They even have Pizza Huts in most cities. But it’s just not the same…
