Show Me Your Favorite Hostel Art

Not every hostel has hostel art, and a good hostel doesn’t even need it to be remembered. But, there are some hostels that are able to take their great service even further by providing a spectacular atmosphere with their decor and art (think Soul Kitchen Jr.).

White Birch International Youth Hostel in Urumqi, China

In western China, Hostelworld hooked Pat and I up with a stay at the White Birch International Youth Hostel in Urumqi. I know… not a place many of you reading this are ever planning to visit, but for those adventurous souls who are, then I give it a thumbs up. Not only was our stay comfortable, our host both happy and able to speak English, but it was also covered in some fantastic hostel art.

Sure, the private rooms weren’t fancy in art:

But the dorm rooms had a little to spruce up the vibe:

The communal areas, however, were awesome:

For a part of the world that doesn’t have much in the way of hostels, I was thoroughly impressed with my stay and with the service. When it comes to hostel art, the communal room would be a definite contender for my favorite… but what about you?

Where have you found your favorite hostel art? Share it in the comments. Feel free to link up to a blog post you wrote, a photo on Flickr, or even the hostel listing on Hostelworld to help prove your point.

I just might be making a follow-up post of my favorites, and yours might get credited!

Oh wow. I haven’t encountered a fancy artsy hostel room yet during my travels! Will definitely share mine when I encountered one πŸ˜€

This is great! You touched on a unique subject, art on hostels. I forget the name, but stayed at a pretty cool hostel in Madrid, lot’s of paintings on the wall. I’ve also had my fair share of cheap no-thrills hostels…everything comes at a price.

    love your site!

Like Tanned Traveler, I’ve stayed a few with great design and others that are really uninspired! I hope more hostels start to get creative with the decor, it adds a lot to the experience of a place (plus, it helps them stand out from the crowd on sites like Hostelbookers and Hostelworld!). I really liked this lobby of a hostel we stayed at in Lisbon, but I can’t remember the name of it:

Thanks for sharing Cassie! I’m surprised more people haven’t added to this list.

Wow, there hostels look wonderful! I have been to one hostel in Beijing and the art there was amazing with some red lanterns hanging on the wall. It looks beautiful at night and I felt like being in a different world. It’s nice to sleep in such a cool place. Great photos, love the colours! πŸ™‚

Thanks, I loved all the colors πŸ™‚ Do you remember the name of the hostel in Beijing?

Yep, the communal room is my favourite one too πŸ™‚ I love it when a hostel has funky art splashed all over the place, gives off such a nice vibe & feel.
