The April Express 2012

All aboard!

The goal of The Monthly Express will be to get you from one month to the next in a quick and easy blog post. I’ll wrap up the big posts of the month, share some of my favorite comments, link to guest posts and articles I’ve written elsewhere, talk about what’s popular on the Facebook page, as well as give a rundown on upcoming news. Here goes!

All aboard!

1st Stop: April Blogging

The focus of April was definitely travel! Pat and I took off on April 7th (after a close call with our flights!) to visit Turkey, a much anticipated destination for both us, even me who has already been to Istanbul.

On arrival, we stopped off at Bahaus, the first hostel on the list of those to be reviewed in conjunction with my partnering with Hostelworld. The hostel is super cool, but alas, we had to drive out of Istanbul in a flash to head to Cappadocia, for an Intrepid Travel tour.

On a packing level, I share 5 cool items that have been brought with me on my trip that I’m really excited about.

And, finally, thrifty travel lovers will rejoice in hearing about ways to save on organized tours. The first post, by Katrina, talks about how she saved thousands on her Kumuka tour just by shopping around, while the second one talks about a way to save a quick 10% by booking through Travel.com.au.

2nd Stop: Weekend Snaps

The most commented on snap of the month would have to be the Barcelona Rings.
Barcelona Rings
The main question was whether or not the rings had anything to do with the Olympics, and after much back and forth on Pinterest, we have discovered they are just a sculpture set to emulate the motion of the waves (called Ones).

3rd Stop: Favorite Comments

See what comments on this site have stuck out as worthy of their own post, or just make me smile.

In response to my work from home life post:

I hear you! My schedule is now two weeks (freelance editing) in the office, two weeks at home (writing), which helps a lot for financial security and overall variety. One tip: Always make sure you leave the house, even if it’s for a walk around the block at 6pm! It’s easy to forget there’s an outside world sometimes… Good luck!

In response to my White Knuckles post:

I had a similar experience in Peru with a really crazy taxi driver. I was on my way to the airport to fly home and a beat up mercedes pulled up and off we went. The car stalled every time the driver stopped so what did we do… we didn’t stop!! Off we went along the road weaving in and out of traffic so we didn’t have to hit that brake. Once we hit the highway at high speed it got even more exciting… I was in the back seat with no seat belt of course – I think the indentations from my fingers are still embedded in that backseat! I’ve had some pretty wild taxi/tuk tuk rides in my time but that one still stays in my memory as the most terrifying.

6th Stop: BvtW News

Pat and I have arrived in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan on Saturday morning after a whirlwind few weeks with stops in Turkey, followed by a week in Italy for the TBU conference. I got a little sick at the end of the actual conference, which unfortunately hit me quite hard when we finally got to Bishkek.

But, tomorrow, Pat and I move into a temporary apartment for 2 weeks in Bishkek, followed by a week of straight travel to the south of Kyrgyzstan and through to Kashgar, China. From Kashgar, we’ll hit up Urumqi and probably fly to Beijing to meet up with Tony and Paula for the Trans-Mongolian train adventure!

And that’s it for the April Express 2012. Be sure to ride again next month!

Loveeeeed Turkey, so I hope you can make it someday :) How was Oslo, besides the non-budget-friendly aspect?

Oslo was great I really loved it. I still want to see sweden and finland…going by the other people I met in Norway I think I will love all of Scandinavia. But I also think they will all be expensive.
