Frozen drink items like Slurpees and Frozen Cokes are really popular Down Under, or at least they’re popular with my boyfriend in particular. I’m the type of person that would rather have a Big Gulp, but not because I can drink the whole thing. I like the value… and the soda.
But, Slurpees are definitely growing on me, and as I was drinking the Slurpee Pat brought home to me the other day, I got to thinking about where else in the world I can actually get a Slurpee.
We all know that 7-Elevens are convenience stores found in various parts of the globe. Do they all sell Slurpees? Do they sell them by a different name? I’m curious.
After initial Wikipedia research, it has been brought to my attention that Canadians freaking love Slurpees. Winnipeg is actually known as the Slurpee Capital of the World! Obviously, I can get Slurpees in Canada.
Australia has taken on Slurpee promotion to a new level. Not only do they have awesome flavors that are switched out weekly in many locations, they have been known to give away a free Slurpee or two to the right customer. Case in point: Redheads got a free Slurpee in honor of Julia Gillard being elected Prime Minister! Now that is a unique promotion.
America has Slurpees, but sometimes the shops sell ICEEs or maybe something called an Icy Drink. Japan used to sell the Slurpee and the Big Gulp, but that was discontinued years ago.
So, I’m interested to know where in the world you have seen or had a Slurpee from a 7-Eleven, and whether or not it was even called a Slurpee. From Wikipedia, it tells me that many of the Asian countries do not sell the name-brand Slurpee… perhaps they sell something else?
I’m all ears and looking forward to seeing what interesting responses this post might bring!

Slurpee and the Big Gulp is all over Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines! =) Perfect drink on a really hot and humid day. Here in Manila, some 7-11s even have different Slurpee flavors so you get a different one for every store you visit. You want the Coke Slurpee? Raspberry? Bubblegum? Green Apple? You have to search the 7-11 who have it! =p
You’re making me absolutely *crave* a Slurpee. I might have to duck out during my lunch break to fetch one. Curse you!
Yes you can definitely get a slurpee in Canada. I used to have them all the time as a kid.If you go to another convenience store/gas station they might be called something different (like at a Mac’s they’re a Froster) but essentially it’s the same thing, ice and sugary syrup.
Thailand! After being on the road for 5 months I was excited to spot my first 7-11 in Chiang Rai, Thailand when I crossed over from Laos. Little did I know that they were on practically every corner of Bangkok. I even posted about drinking slurpees in Thailand back in 2005. My favorite is 3/4 coke and 1/4 banana flavors but it’s not often I find banana in stores these days.
Do you get free Slurpees at 7-11 on July 11th in Australia, too? (or anywhere else outside of America?) The one I stop at on my way to or from work has pina colada and it’s DELICIOUS.
I’M DYING FOR A SLURPEE. They haven’t been sold anywhere we have been.
i’ve never encountered a slurpee outside of america. and while i enjoy the occasional slurpee, the last one i had was a few months ago, when thor came out in theaters. i got the big thor cup, which, i’m sad to say, was better than the movie. and yes, that red head promotion is rather unique. The US doesn’t have any cool slurpee promotions like that, other than free slurpee day.
The Slurpee Syrup
Take one packet of Kool-aid your choice of flavors, add 1 to 1-1/2 cups hot water into a blender along with 3/4 cup sugar and the packet of Kool-aid and blend until completely dissolved. (sugar dissolves in hot water unlike cold water, where it settles to the bottom)
Blending
Next fill the entire blender with ice to the top, the very top. and pulse till the ice is will broken down. Next liquefy or frappe. At a point during the liquefy process you’ll need to add some ice cold water to fill the blender to near the top which will allow the thick ice mixture to finish blending.
This recipe makes a perfect Slurpee. I like the green lemon-lime and the blue lemon raspberry.
When you’re in Jakarta, you’ll have no problem finding Slurpee. It’s a hip thing amongst the teenagers, and 7-11 is opening at every corner of the street (ok, a little exaggeration there, but they’re ubiquitous!).
